Objective : To collect basic data for the elderly mental health by identifying influence of depressive symptoms and physical illness on sleep disturbance.
Methods : Among 1,535 Medicaid patients at least age 60 residing in Chungju, 1,262 people were examined April 25-July 31, 2011. We investigated general characteristics of patients and history of physical illness. We conducted screening tests for depression and sleep quality. Data analysis was conducted by ttest, Pearson's correlation, and step by step regression analysis with SPSS. SPSS/PC WIN 19 version.
Results : Among the 1,262 survey patients, 520 (41%) people had depressive symptoms and 718 (57%) patients had sleep disturbance. Also, 140 (11%) patients had been diagnosed with stroke, 712 (56%) patients had hypertension, and 279 (22%) patients had diabetes mellitus. Among variables, depressive symptoms and hypertension revealed positive correlation with sleep quality.
Conclusion : The study demonstrated that depressive symptoms have significant effect on sleep quality in the elderly older than age 60. We suggest that elderly patients with sleep disturbance need care for depression and hypertension.
